St. Charles County Area Leaders Begin Adopt-A-County Effort

St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana to Receive Equipment, Goods, Labor
St. Charles County, MO (Tues, Sept 13, 2005) -- St. Charles County leaders are partnering to adopt a Louisiana county and assist in the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts. St. Bernard Parish, located on the outskirts of New Orleans, will receive donations collected through the generosity of county and city governments, school districts, emergency services, social service agencies, developers, and residents. All interested organizations are encouraged to participate.
St. Charles County Councilman Joe Brazil and Wentzville Mayor Paul Lambi are coordinating with area agencies to collect much-needed items for residents and workers involved in the cleanup. Local governments are working to send dump trucks, construction equipment and personnel to help clear the debris and allow St. Bernard Parish officials to assist their residents. Area contractors are asked to consider donating equipment and volunteers to aid in the remediation work.
Beginning Wed, Sept 14, donations may be brought to The Family Arena, 2002 Arena Parkway in St. Charles, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Items needed include:
ïClothing (suitable for Louisianaís climate, no winter items), shoes & boots-especially waterproof boots
ïNon-perishable foods (no glass)
ïPersonal hygiene items
ïCleaning Supplies
ïTools
ïBoxes and packing tape
After the remaining water is cleared and St. Bernard Parish is able to utilize these resources, donated items will be transported by truck. Officials anticipate a late September departure. Although communication to the area is still difficult, local officials are in contact with St. Bernard Parish government officials who know and appreciate that the St. Charles County area is standing by to help them reclaim and rebuild their community.
ìSpeaking with Mayor Lambi and other area leaders, we feel that the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe is one of the worst we have witnessed in our lifetime. While the Midwest has not been directly affected, as a nation weíll feel the effects for years to come. The needs are great and we will provide whatever support we can because, at some point in the future, it could be our community that needs that assistance. We will be good neighbors whether it is a community across the river or the nation,î said Councilman Brazil.
