National Children's Cancer Society Website Implements On Line Tools
June 22, 2004

The National Childrenís Cancer Society (NCCS) launched their new web site in April of 2004. ìWe previously have not leveraged powerful interactive tools,î commented Erica Harris of NCCS. ìThe new website will allow us to tap into areas we could not before,î and will work to better serve both its families and donors.
The new website will allow visitors to interactively participate in and support NCCS events. Visitors will be able to sponsor a walker for the annual ìRainbow Girls Walk to Benefit the National Childrenís Cancer Societyî, register for special events throughout the year, and shop at the virtual store. A convenient database driven email tool will inform supporters of upcoming events and issues, allowing them to easily share events with others.
Because the mission of NCCS is to assist the families of children with cancer, another new interactive feature has been included that will provide an online support group for families and friends. These special visitors will be able to access a private area where they can share information, experiences, photos and support with other families. The site will also include online applications which families in need can download and submit to be considered for assistance.
After a year-long search, The National Childrenís Cancer Societyís chose jWeb New Media Design, a web design firm based in St. Charles County, to create the new site. ìjWeb was selected over 17 other prospective firms because they provided an administrative tool that will allow us to update content and photos ourselves, rather than relying on a technician,î explained Harris. ìThey also provided a mass-email marketing tool with a database history. Quite simply, jWeb is a smaller firm that is able to do a lot.î
Amy Comparato, a partner with jWeb, feels they were selected because they understand the needs and budget imposed on a non-profit organization, and are able to work within those parameters. jWeb is donating the first year of hosting and maintenance, and presented a longterm payment plan to meet the organizationís financial needs.
The National Childrenís Cancer Society is a non-profit organization that provides direct financial support to children with cancer and their families. By teaming up with more than 200 pediatric oncology hospitals and cancer centers around the country, NCCS is able to identify and help children and families in need, providing financial assistance for cancer-related expenses. Any family that demonstrates financial need is a prospect, regardless of socio-economic status prior to diagnosis. Since 1987, the National Childrenís Cancer Society has granted over $25,000,000 to more than 10,000 families. Local supporters include KSDK Channel 5 and the Pulitzer Foundation/St. Louis Post Dispatch. For more information, please contact Erica Harris at 314-241-1600 or visit www.children-cancer.org.
